Between continuous growth spurts and playing like their lives depended on it, keeping kids in decent shoes can be difficult even for those without monetary restraints. But for the parents of the disadvantaged children in Immokalee, new shoes and supplies for school are sadly not options when competing with other necessities such as food and rent. That is why each year, the Guadalupe Center holds their annual Back to School Shoes & Supplies Drive as one of its many support programs.
Each August, the week before school starts, 50 children a day are transported to Naples to be fitted with a pair of brand new shoes. This trip to Naples is a highlight of their summer, and for many, this is their first pair of new shoes.
In partnership with local businesses, communities and volunteer organizations, last year the Guadalupe Center sent more than 350 youngsters off to school with new shoes and school supplies. Employees of Snyderman’s Shoes and volunteers with Laces of Love make sure each child is fitted with shoes that are just right for them, and Russell’s Clambakes provides a delicious lunch for the kids.
The challenge each year is keeping up with the need. While many children receive what they need, there are many more that need our help. Donations of child-size sneakers, socks, and school supplies, as well as monetary donations, are welcome and may be dropped off at the Guadalupe Upscale Resale & Consignment Shop, 8100 Trail Blvd. Naples, just south of Vanderbilt Beach Road on US 41.
Monetary donations may be made online at www.guadalupecenter.org or mailed to:
509 Hope Circle
Immokalee, FL 34142.
Shoes and school supplies are handed out all year long as little feet don’t stop growing, and little children never stop learning!
The Guadalupe Center is a non-profit organization focused on helping impoverished families in Immokalee. The mission of the Guadalupe Center is to break the cycle of poverty by providing educational, social, and other support programs and resources.
