Faith in Action — Feeding the Hungry

IMG_5316The Casa Maria Soup Kitchen is part of the Guadalupe Social Services Catholic Charities organization in Immokalee. GSS serves hundreds of people in need on a daily basis with a food pantry, emotional and immigration counseling services, a free clothing donation room, and showers for those without water.  The Soup Kitchen serves lunch Monday through Friday every week, feeding every single person who comes hungry, from infants to seniors. During Saint John the Evangelist’s most recent visit on Tuesday, July 26, there were so many in need, an additional seating was required to ensure everyone was able to fill their stomachs and their souls with the generosity of the community and our volunteers.

This Soup Kitchen has only one staff member, so all the effort is accomplished with volunteers. From prepping the meal by cutting vegetables and pulling chicken to serving the food and drinks with a smile, to washing the dishes and the doors, the youth of our Parish Family showcased the best possible illustration of our faith in action. St. John is responsible for volunteering at the Soup Kitchen every fourth Tuesday. During the summer, our Youth take the lead in supporting the effort, but we need all the help we can get each month. If you would like to help out at the soup kitchen, contact Jean-Paul Boucher, General Manager, at [email protected].
